You are invited to participate in research being conducted by Cornell University with individuals who have self injured and their families.  Details for participating in this study:

 

Research Project: Interview Participants Wanted!

Have you ever intentionally hurt yourself (e.g., cut, scratched, burned, etc.)?

We are looking for two groups of interview participants for a research study:

  • Young people (ages 15-24) who have personal self-injury experience and
  • Parents/guardians of young people (ages 15-24) who have self-injured

We would like to talk with you about self-injury experiences, discussing self-injury with family members, therapy, and recovery from self-injury.

Each participant will receive $25 gift card as a "thank you" gift for participating in this research study.

Participant eligibility:

Youth participant eligibility:

  • Must be age 18-24
  • Must have personal self-injury experience (but can be anywhere in the recovery process, that is, from just disclosed to fully recovered)
  • At least one parent must know about your self-injury experience
  • Not been hospitalized/ institutionalized for mental health reasons longer than 1 month (in total, or cumulative)

Parent participant eligibility:

  • Must have a child, aged 18-24, with personal self-injury experience, who has not been hospitalized/institutionalized for mental health reasons longer than 1 month (in total, or cumulative)

At this time, we are focusing our recruitment on family units (that is, 2 or more participants from a single family) – we would like to interview both the young person with self-injury experience and at least one parent/guardian.

Recruiting Family Members

If you are interested in participating, please consider recruiting others in your family to participate in this research study. If you have personal self-injury experience, please consider asking one or both of your parents to participate. (If there is another adult family member you think would be important for us to talk with, please considering asking him or her, as well. You can forward this email.)

If your child (aged 15-24) has self-injury experience and you are interested in participating in our research study, please consider asking your child to participate, too. You can forward this email.

PLEASE NOTE: Even when multiple members of a family are interviewed, ALL interviews will be conducted SEPARATELY.
